Papers

Papers in this course will use MLA format. Purdue Owl will be an important resource used for formatting of papers in this course. In the event of conflict between updated instructions on Purdue Owl and those on webpages of this course and instructions for the papers, course instructions have priority.

Use MS Word only for the editing of the papers and for reviewing my comments. Other software does not fully support the right hand comments on papers or the grading rubrics I will use in this course. There is a half a grade penalty for not using MicroSoft Word. (MS Word is provided for free for TU Students. Please see the Virtual Workspace).

If you are looking for methods of citation, please see this
page.

If you are looking for the course bibliography, please see this page.

Your papers must always avoid informal verbiage such as: I/me/my/myself, get/got/gotten/getting, you/your/yourself. Essays are not written in the way that we speak in daily conversation. Avoid opinion statements that are unsupported.

MLA Sample paper from Purdue OWL:copy. Follow this format for papers in the course. Note that "Academic" (Print) at the end of each work cited is needed for works that appear in print.

Please note: This MLA sample paper from Purdue OWL is not a good example of academic prose in the first two paragraphs since it refers too often to the author (“I” statements). However, after the first two paragraphs the academic prose is excellent.

The word count for the papers will vary by assignment. However, the requirements for works cited are the same for each paper. You must identify the print materials with "Print" at the end of the citation. Please see the MLA sample paper.

Please see the grading rubric for each paper for required numbers of citations.
